    PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE, OF TANGANYIKA, WAS INSTALLED AS CHANCELLOR AT THE INAUGURATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF EAST AFRICA, IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (FRIDAY).

    MR. JOMO KENYATTA, THE KENYA PRIME MINISTER, AND MR. MILTON OBOTE, PREMIER OF UGANDA, WERE AMONG THE AFRICAN LEADERS AND REPRESENTATIVES FROM 45 UNIVERSITIES AND FIVE CONTINENTS WHO ATTENDED THE CEREMONY.

    THE UNIVERSITY, NON-RACIAL AND NON-SECTARIAN, WAS FORMED FROM AKERE COLLEGE, KAMPAL, ROYAL TECHNICAL COLLEGE, NAIROBI, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, NAIROBI, AND THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, DAR ES SALAAM.

    PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE ATTENDED EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY, SCOTLAND, WHERE HE GRADUATED IN 1952 AS A MASTER OF ARTS HAVING READ ECONOMICS AND HISTORY, HIS INSTALLATION AS CHANCELLOR IS POPULAR SINCE HE HAS BEEN A LEADING FIGURE IN T EH MOVES TOWARDS AN EAST AFRICAN FEDERATION.

    TWO SPECIAL STAMPS HAVE BEEN ISSUED TO COMMEMORATE THE INAUGURATION OF THE UNIVERSITY.
