Background: Pakistan's President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on Thursday that his government would not recognise Bangladesh until all Pakistani prisoners of war had been released. The wives and families of Pakistani prisoners of war still detained in India demonstrated in Lahore, capital of Punjab Province on Wednesday, calling for the immediate repatriation of the POWS.

The demonstrators called for an honourable and conditional recognition of Bangladesh.

The POW Families Association adopted a resolution saying that new realities must be faced squarely in an intelligent, practical and honest way to bring back Pakistani POWs from India.

Placards reading "I Miss my Dad", "Bring back the POWs" and "There should be no trials of POW's" were carried by the demonstrators. The gathering was addressed by the Chief Minister of the Province of Punjab, who told them that the People's Government was doing everything possible to mobilise world opinion for the early repatriation of the POWs.
