  • Description

In Canada the world figure skating championship had a surprise result when Charles Tickner, a 24-year-old American, won the men's title. Tickner took the title on Friday (10 March) when he overtook the European champion Jan Hoffman of East Germany in the free-skating section of the programme. Tickner is the first American to win the men's title since 1970. America also seemed to be in a strong position to win the women's title, with their defending champion, 17-year-old Linda Fratianne, skating well to win the short programme section. But she failed to catch up with the East German, Anett Poetz???, who won the women's title on Sunday (12 March). Here with a report from the championships in Ottawa is Vic Hultquist, of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
