  • Description

ARMED POLICE TODAY (WEDNESDAY) GUARDED THE DJAKARTA OFFICES OF THE SHELL AND UNILEVER COMPANIES, FOLLOWING TAKE-OVER BIDS BY INDONESIAN UNIONS. WORK WAS REPORTED NORMAL WITH THE MANAGEMENTS IN CONTROL.

THE UNIONS APPEARED TO HAVE ACCEPTED A GOVERNMENT RULING THAT SUCH ACTION WAS ILLEGAL. FILM, SHOT YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), SHOWS THE AFTERMATH OF THE TAKE-OVER ATTEMPTS.

IN SPITE OF AN ASSURANCE FROM THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT THAT THE TAKE-OVER BID WAS ILLEGAL, THE MANAGEMENT OF THE SHELL OIL COMPANY OF INDONESIAN LEFT INDONESIAN FLAGS FLYING FROM THE BUILDING "TO KEEP THE PEACE."
SIGNS READING "MILIK R.I." (INDONESIAN PROPERTY) WERE PLASTERED OVER THE BUILDING, COMPANY BUSES AND CARS. STREETS WERE FESTOONED WITH ANTI-MALAYSIA SIGNS.

THE ATTEMPTED TAKE-OVERS FOLLOWED THE IMPOUNDING IN HONGKONG OF TWO INDONESIAN SHIPS CARRYING PILGRIMS TO MECCA. UNIONS SAW THIS AS A RETALIATION BY BRITAIN AGAINST INDONESIA'S ANTI-MALAYSIA.

SIGNS SIGNIFYING "INDONESIAN PROPERTY" WERE ALSO HUNG FROM THE UNILEVER BUILDING AND ON COMPANY VEHICLES. THREATENED UNREST AMONG THE WORKERS FORCED THE EUROPEAN MANAGEMENT TO STAY HOME FOR TWO DAYS. UNILEVER, A DUTCH-BRITISH COMBINE, IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST COMPANIES.
