  • Description

African liberation movements will not give up their armed struggle against Portugal without prior recognition of independence. This uncompromising message come from the opening session of the Organisation of African Unity Liberation Committee in Yaounds last week.

Cameroun President Ahmadou Ahidjo told the meeting: "No negotiation is possible." The liberation movements of Portuguese Angola, Mozambique and Guinea cannot agree to lay down their arms without a prior recognition clearly stated of the rights of their people and of independence.

Several other delegates from the 18 member countries of the OAU -- including self-proclaimed Guinea-Bissau for the first time--also emphasises that there could be no question of a compromise with the new Portuguese regime.

During the six-day closed session, delegates were also to hear reports from two South African organisations, the African National Congress and the Pan African Congress.
