The World Ploughing Organisation's 7th World Ploughing Contest is being held at Armoy, Co. Antrim Northern Ireland, October 8 and 9. Also at Armoy, the Northern Ireland Ploughing Association's 16th International Ploughing Championships are taking place, October 7 and 10. 10.
In the World Ploughing Contest, competitors from 16 countries throughout the world are taking part. At the firing of a red rocket, the ploughmen went into action; their aim - to plough the best furrows on their plot within a given time. In the first event, Oct. 8, they were competing in Stubble Ploughing; today (Oct. 9) it is Grassland Ploughing.
Champion since last year's contest was England's Leslie Goodwin, of Hereford. He is 28 and has been ploughing since 1949. Runner-up at last year's contest, held at Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany, was Laurence McMillan, Northern Ireland, who is competing again this year.
