    PRESIDENT NYERERE OF TANZANIA TOOK THE SALUTE AT A RALLY YESTERDAY (MONDAY) TO CELEBRATE THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNION OF ZANZIBAR AND TANGANYIKA. TROOPS MARCHED PAST THE PRESIDENT, FOLLOWED BY TRIBESMEN AND ENTERTAINERS FROM REGIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. WITH THE PRESIDENT WERE VICE-PRESIDENTS KARUME AND KAWAWA.

    THE PRESIDENT WAS DRESSED IN HIS NEW CHINESE-STYLE SUIT TO WATCH CONTINGENTS FROM THE ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR. FOR HOURS BEFORE THE STADIUM WAS OPENED FOR SPECTATORS, TRIBESMEN BEGAN MOVING IN FROM REMOTE PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.

    AS CIVILIANS PASSED THE GRANDSTAND, THEY CARRIED PLACARDS, AMONG THEM ONE READING "WE REGARD TSHOMBE AS A TRAITOR".

    THE GUESTS INCLUDED MRS. BARBARA CASTLE, THE BRITISH MINISTER OF OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT, WHO IS ON A WEEK'S VISIT TO TANZANIA. SHE ANNOUNCED TO BRITISH RESIDENTS IN TANZANIA THAT BRITAIN HAD CHANNELLED MORE THAN GBP27 MILLIONS INTO THE COUNTRY SINCE INDEPENDENCE WHILE 1,200 BRITISH TECHNICIANS WERE WORKING IN TANZANIA. MRS. CASTLE WAS HAVING FURTHER TALKS WITH THE PRESIDENT.
