Background: Riot police in Amsterdam were confronted by an angry group of sympathizers on Tuesday (19 August) when they went to evict squatters in one of city's luxury apartments. Two thousand policemen were sent to the building, after sixty squatters had ignored a court order to vacate the 7,000,000 apartment block. When the police arrived Monday afternoon, and entered the barricaded building via the roof, they found only two squatters. The others had left earlier.

SYNOPSIS: The riots, like the first serious clashes during the inauguration of Queen Beatrix, were believed to have been triggered by tension growing out of the city's grave housing shortage.

The two lone squatters told the police they could not leave -- the door had been welded shut.

Prepared for the squatters' earlier threat to defend their position, the police presence included a special armed unit and a number of cranes to lift them onto the top of the building.

    Then the riot squad arrived.

The tension exploded, as squatters and sympathizers unleashed their anger at the municipality's housing policies. there are an estimated 10,000 squatters in the city, with more than 50,000 officially registered as looking for a home.

Stones, smoke bombs, road traffic signs, or anything at hand, were hurled at the police vehicles.

An unattended police van was forcibly attacked and turned over. Eleven policemen and at least six other people were injured in the clashes.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the squatters and their friends, then brought in the water cannons to clear the streets. Police said seventeen people were arrested.

Even as the disturbance ended, disagreements were breaking out between rioters and other Amsterdam residents.
