  • Description

Hostages turned on a gunman after being held captive for 18 hours in Hong Kong yesterday (Saturday, May 24). As it happened, armed police stormed into the bank where the hostages were being held.

Police later said that several of the hostages, who included four women, freed themselves while the gunman was on the telephone negotiating with the authorities. Some of the captives attacked the gunman, others ran outside. One hostage was slightly injured -- so was the gunman.

Throughout the previous night more than 100 armed police had besieged Hong Kong's Po Sang bank building. The alarm had first sounded after the gunman, claiming to be an immigrant from Vietnam, tried to stage a holdup.

During the long night of bargaining, the gunman threatened to kill hostages unless getaway cars were provided. There has been shooting as he rushed into the bank of Friday night, and again yesterday during the climactic struggle. But no-one suffered from gunshot wounds.

As the gunman was finally overpowered, police seized his haula -- a paltry GBP 750 sterling.
