    Violence erupted in Sydney on Sunday (7th April) when opposing factions of the Greek community argued over the right to hold services in the Greek Orthodox Cathedral. A large squad of police as outside the cathedral in South Dowling Street, Paddington, to break up argument and sporadic punching matches between members of both factions.

    Abuse was yelled ag priets, members of a newly established Greek independent church which claims to have majority support from the Greek community to use one cathedral.

    At one stage a priest was punched to the ground by several men. One man had his shirt ripped from his back.

    The opposing faction, which wants to retain the traditional Greek Orthodox church in Australia, also claims right to the cathedral. The fracas ended when the two priests from the Greek Independent church were taken from the secene under heavy police guard.
