  • Description

FIGHTER AIRCRAFT OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE AND BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS PASSENGER AIRLINERS ARE UNDER ORDERS TO CHALLENGE -- AS FROM TOMORROW (MONDAY) MORNING - ANY ATTEMPT BY SPAIN TO IMPOSE RESTRICTIONS ON AIRSPACE IN THE APPROACHES TO GIBRALTAR AIRSTRIP. A COMET AIRLINER OF BEA WILL LEAVE LONDON AT 4 A.M. TOMORROW MORNING AND WILL BE THE FIRST BRITISH CIVIL AIRCRAFT TO ATTEMPT A LANDING ON THE ROCK AFTER SPAIN OPERATES HER FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS AT 1AM.

THE DECISION TO IGNORE THE SPANISH RESTRICTIONS, IMPOSED IN A MADRID DEGREE ON APRIL 12, WAS TAKEN ON FRIDAY (MAY 12) AFTER CONFERENCES BETWEEN THE FOREIGN OFFICE, THE BOARD OF TRADE, BEA AND BRITISH UNITED AIRWAYS.

EARLIER LAST WEEK, THE FOREIGN OFFICE HAD RECEIVED FROM MADRID A MAP WHICH CLEARLY OUTLINED THE AREA - INCLUDING WATERS OVER WHICH SPAIN CLAIMED SOVEREIGNTY - FROM WHICH GENERAL FRANCO BANNED OVER-FLYING BY CIVIL AND MILITARY AIRCRAFT. THE SPANISH LINE CUTS CLEARLY ACROSS NORMAL FLIGHT PATHS IN BOTH EASTERLY AND WESTERLY APPROACHES.

DISCUSSIONS BY THE INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION ORGANISATION IN MONTREAL ENDED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) IN STALEMATE, WITH NO PROSPECTS OF FURTHER TALKS ON BRITAIN'S REQUEST FOR DELAYING ACTION.

IN LONDON, IT WAS STATED LAST NIGHT THAT BRITISH MILITARY AND CIVIL AIRCRAFT ARE PREPARED TO "RUN THE GAUNTLET". COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY, MR HERBERT BOWDEN, MADE IT PLAIN THAT FLIGHTS WOULD CONTINUE.

AT PRESENT, THERE ARE NO DEFINITE SIGNS THAT SPAIN INTENDS TO IMPLEMENT HER THREAT TO ENFORCE THE DECREE BY MOORING BARRAGE BALLOONS TO BARGES. THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE SPANISH AIR FORCE MIGHT AT A LATER STAGE TRY TO HARASS BRITISH AIRCRAFT, WAS NOT RULED OUT, AND AIRLINES HAVE BEEN GIVEN FREEDOM TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS ON MAINTAINING FLIGHTS.
