Violent confrontations between students and police continued in Argentina Thursday (23 May). In Rosario, the nation's second-largest city, rioting students seized a radio station, set fires, and battled police in the streets.
Similar battles erupted in Buens Aires, La Plata, Tucerman, Salta, and Cordoba. In Rosario, police brandished sabers at rioting students. Scores of persons were injured and arrested.
One cause of the violence was the killing on Sunday (18 May) of Rodolfo Roque Bello, 22, an economics student at Rosario University. He was shot in the head by a policeman as officers broke up a demonstration protesting the earlier shooting of another student.
Hundreds of persons marched in the funeral cortege for the student in Buens Aires Tuesday (20 May).
A few hours after the funeral, police and students clashed in the streets of Buens Aires. The police fired tear gas grenades and used batons to disperse the students. Police and detectives arrested several protesters.
