The sport of windsurfing..which came to prominence with the first world championships two years ago...is getting bigger. Not only are there more competitors, but now the boards are larger and where before there was only room for one skipper..now there's a place for a crewman as well. The name for this two on a board development,...what else...tandem windsurfing.
SYNOPSIS: The idea that two are better than one has become so popular the recent Travemunde Sailing week held on the Baltic Sea, featured a world championship for tandems.
Sixty-two teams from six countries sailed onto Travemunde's Bay of Lubeck in northern West Germany, to contest the title. Tandems are generally much larger than their solo counterparts, have longer centre-boards and carry two sails. While many are specially designed for the task some are not much more than just a combination of two single boards joined together. the championship was open to just about everyone and everything. There were no age or wight limitations on the competitors and they could ride virtually anything that would float, as long as it resembled the basic design.
In this heat the Austrian team of Raudaschl and Lechner, carrying sail number 4141 outclassed their opponents, but at the end of the six race championship they had to be content with overall second place. All competitors and eventually it was local knowledge that won out.
The championship winners ... the West German team of Pdenz and Koehnlein.
