Background: IN ROME ON CHRISTMAS DAY, A SEA OF UMBRELLAS UNDER SOAKING DRIZZLE AS WORSHIPPERS GATHER IN ST. PETER'S SQUARE TO HEAR POPE JOHN DELIVER THE TRADITIONAL "URBI ET ORBI" (TO THE CITY AND THE WORLD) MESSAGE OF PAPAL BENEDICTION.

THE 81-YEAR-OLD PONTIFF, APPEARING AT A WINDOW OF THE VATICAN PALACE, WAS GREETED WITH PROLONGED APPLAUSE FROM THE BIG THRONG. IN A STEADY VOICE, HE GAVE A BRIEF ADDRESS AND IMPARTED HIS BLESSING.

HE REFERRED TO HIS CHRISTMAS BROADCAST ON SATURDAY IN WHICH HE URGED PEACE AND CHRISTIAN UNITY, AND SAID THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT SHOULD NOT STOP AT SEASONAL GREETINGS. WHAT WAS IMPORTANT, HE ADDED, WAS "THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION TO PERSONS AND SOCIETY OF THE CHRISTMAS MESSAGE."
EARLIER ON CHRISTMAS DAY, POPE JOHN LEFT THE VATICAN CITY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE HIS RESENT ILLNESS TO VISIT A CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL IN ROME (SEE 8060/62)
