Background: Tennis ... and Martina Navratilova, now an American citizen, has shown she is the outstanding women's player of 1982. Miss Navratilova crushed Chris Evert Lloyd 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 on December 19. Afterwards, Mrs Lloyd conceded that her rival was the No.1 woman player. Miss Navratilova won 75,000 U.S. dollars, raising her 1982 earnings to a women's record of 1,461,055. She had taken the title in 15 of 18 tournaments during the year, losing only three of 93 singles matches. Mrs Lloyd said she had gone into the Toyota final relaxed, in contrast to her rival, who was very tense. Eventually it was Miss Navratilova's concentration during the rallies at key points -- normally a strength for Mrs Lloyd - that took her to success. After Mrs Lloyd had taken the first set from a service break in the third game, Miss Navratilova cleverly mixed the tempo of her play to dominate the remaining two sets.
