  • Description

Funeral services were held Tuesday (5 April) in Fullerton, California for C.S. Forester, the noted author of the Horatio Hornblower novels. Cecil Scott Forester died last Wednesday (30 March).

The services took place at the First Presbyterian Church in Fullerton. Mr. Forester had lived in California since World War II, although he retained his British citizenship. Among the family present for the services were Mr. and Mrs. George Forester (one of the author's two sons), five-year-old Adrine and seven-year-old Sarah Forester (two grand-children), and Kathleen Lynch (the author's first wife).

Mr. Forester first published in 1925 - a crime novel called "Payment Deferred". In addition to the highly successful Hornblower novels, he wrote "The African Queen", "The Gun" and a number of novels about naval action in the Second World War. He was born in Cairo and educated in England.

Mr. Forester was paralysed by a stroke 18 months ago. He entered a Fullerton Hospital the day of his death after another seizure. "All of a sudden he was there, and then he wasn't," his widow said.

He married Kathleen Belcher (now Kathleen Lynch) in 1926, divorcing her 20 years later. He married the former Dorothy Ellen Foster of London in 1949. He is survived by his widow and by two sons, George and John.

Thirty-five people were present at the services on Tuesday.
