    Background: QASR-E-SHIRIN & SAR-E-POLE ZAHAB, IRAN

Iraq announced at the end of June that its forces were pulling back to the international Iran/Iraq border, in an attempt to end their long and costly war. On July 5, Iran claimed Iraqi troops were still occupying parts of its border provinces and that artillery duels have continued. The township and surrounding area of Sar-E-Pole-E-Zahab in the western region of Iran testified to the damage cause in the fighting. Not only was there a heavy loss of life on both sides -- buildings, equipment and vehicles were rendered useless. The situation in the border town of Qasr-E-Shirin was much the same. The smoke from smouldering fires highlighted the intensity of the recently fought battles and buildings within the city bear the scars of months of bombardment. A torn poster of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and the Iranian flag flying over the liberated territory spelled out the fluctuating fortunes of war between the two Gulf nations.
