Background: Crowds of Sandinista supporters gathered in Nicaragua's capital, Managua, on September 2 to celebrate the newly-instated Army Day. A law passed recently by the government's State council fixed September 2 as the chosen date in honour of the same day in 1927 when the revolutionary leader A.C. Sandino founded the movement known as the "Army of Free Men". A helicopter fly-past and a parade by 500 Sandinista soldiers marked the occasion. The celebrations were held in a Managuan square outside the Escuela Carlos Aguero, the former training centre for ex-President Somoza's army which was defeated by the Sandinistas in the 1979 revolution. The ceremony was attended by several government officials, among them Umberto Ortega, Army Chief and Minister of Defence, and his brother Foreign Minister Daniel Ortega. A speech praising the courage and skill of the Nicaraguan Army was given by Mr. Cordobes Rivas, President of the Conservative Democrat Party (PCD).
