  • Description

The official casualty toll in a Communist mortar attack on a Mekong Delta primary school has risen to 24 children killed and 64 children and adults wounded.

A solitary 82mm mortar round crashed into the Cai Lay district school, 45 miles (65 kms) southwest of Saigon on Saturday (9 March). The children, aged between 5 and 11 years old, were lining up to go into their classroom at the time.

Newsmen, who were shown the school on Monday (11 March), were told of small children lying dead and wounded in the play-ground. A pile of bloodstained clothing and satchels, lying near a shrapnel pitted classroom wall, was all that was left of the attack.

Government officials in Cai Lay said the families of those who died will receive 5,000 piastres (about three and half pounds sterling) from the government. Meanwhile 49 children and adults were still in a hospital in nearby My Tho on Monday.

South Vietnam has protested to the International Commission for Control and Supervision (ICCS) over last Saturday's attack on the school.
