  • Description

In Ankara, Turkey, June 10, thousands attended the funeral of four students and an army lieutenant, who were killed during the recent disturbances which led to the overthrow of the Menderes Government.

A long procession of mourners - relatives and friends, soldiers and civilians, high-ranking officers and leading personalities of public life - accompanied the five coffins, mounted on gun carriages, on their way from Cebeci Mosque to the Ataturk Mausoleum. The crowd carried pictures of the dead and bags of earth taken from the places where they were born. Public prayers lasting 90 minutes preceded the last rites according to Moslem custom. At the graveside, a student read poems written by the young lieutenant. As guns boomed a salute, sixteen jet fighters roared overhead in tribute to the dead.

The five people buried outside the Mausoleum were an 8-year-old schoolboy and two students of Istanbul University, a student from Ankara, and the young officer who lost his life in the capital.
