Background: The North and South Korean Coordinating Committee, set up by the two countries as a channel for official dialogue, met again on March 15 after a break of three-and-a-half months. This time the South Korean delegation travelled to the northern capital of Pyongyang for the talks.

No official statement was issued at the end of the meeting to indicate whether the two sides narrowed their sharp differences in approach toward unification.

A pooled report from Pyongyang said that the North's chief delegate, Deputy Premier Pak Sung-Chul renewed his government's call for a peace treaty to enforce military cutbacks as a key step toward unification.

But the head of the southern delegation, Lee Hu-Rak, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, said both sides should first try to build mutual trust through social, cultural and economic exchanges.

The Coordinating Committee was set up under a declaration of rapprochement between the two Korea's on 4 July 1972, with the aim of easing tensions and eventual unification of the two countries. The first formal meeting took place in Seoul on 30 November.

The actual meeting took place the day after this film was shot...on Thursday. No official announcement was made on the outcome of these talks. But a report from Pyongyang indicated that Mr. Lee said both sides should first try to build mutual trust through social and economic exchanges. The North wanted a peace treaty to enforce military cutbacks as an important first stop toward unification.

No date has been set for the next round of talks...but it is expected that the two Korea's will meet again within the next four months.
