  • Description

The first group of 106 Nigerian children flown to Gabon during the civil war arrived back in Lagos on Monday (23 November), accompanied by an official Gabonese delegations. They were welcomed at Lagos airport by Major-General Yakubu Gowon, the nigerian head of State, who assured them of adequate care and protection.

The children were entertained on arrival by the band of the Pacelli School for the Blind at Oshodi, and General Gowon danced with some of the children as the band played.

The children flew later Monday to the cil-city of Port Harcourt to be reunited with their families.

In a brief airport speech, General Gowon expressed gratitude to Gabonese President Bernard Bongo and his people for the care they had given the children during their two-year stay in Gabon. He assured the children of safety and equal opportunities in Nigeria.
