The building is immensely long, and with its glass walls, is described as a huge palace of glass. Underneath runs the Route Nationale 7 from Paris to Fontainebleau. The new terminal gives Orly the most modern airport installations in the world. Everything is arranged to save passengers' time.
The airport will become as mall "town" of 20,000 inhabitants. Four million passengers, and two million sightseers are expected each year. 7,200 tons of steel -- equal to the weight of the Eiffel Tower -- went into the building.
Inside, there is a hotel section, four restaurants, ten bars, a children's section, a clinic, an entertainment hall, a chapel, end a room for journalists and cameramen. A series of escalators leads from one floor to another. Colour-code signs lead the passenger to his aircraft On the sales floor, 120 firms will operate their "boutiques" -- ranging from hairdressing salons to souvenir shops. Customs formalities and baggage handling are speeded up as much as possible, hand-baggage being moved on conveyor belts. Over the public address system -- with 3,000 loudspeakers -- soft music will be played between flight announcements. A notable feature is the complete absence of clocks...the time is shown in figures on 3,000 remote-controlled screens. The doors of the new Orly will be opened to passengers for the first time on March 8, when the inaugural flight leaves for Algiers.
