  • Description

A mass funeral was held in the little town of Radevormwald, West Germany, today (June 1) for the 41 children who died in last week's train crash only a few miles from their homes. Firemen and Red Cross workers carried the coffins from a local school, where all the children Lad been pupils, to the cemetery. The wreath-bedecked coffins had been laid out in the gymnastic hall. In a silent, poignant, ceremony, the firemen and Red Cross coffin bearers were the only ones present as the victims were lowered into a mass grave. Parents of the children did not attend the funeral.

SYNOPSIS: Flags fluttered at half mast outside a local high school in the little West German town of Radevormwald this week. Inside, laid out in the school hall, was the reason for mourning....41 coffins, each containing a victim of last week's train crash in which a total of 47 people died. PAUSE THREE SECONDS. A mass funeral was held on Tuesday for the children, who were returning from a school train outing and were only a few miles from home when the accident happened. Firemen and Red Cross workers acted as coffin bearers for the funeral cortege which wound its way through the town's silent streets.

The children, who numbered half of the school's pupils, were lowered into a mass grave in sad silence. The only spectators were the coffin-bearing firemen and Red Cross staff. For the numbed, grief-stricken parents of the little victims, the funeral was too much to bear....they had to stay away. It was a lonely, poignant end.
