  • Description

IN SOUTH AFRICA, THE FIRST NOTICES FOR 24-HOUR HOUSE ARREST HAVE BEEN SERVED (NOV 9) ON A JOHANNESBURG JOURNALIST, AND ON A WHOLESALE DEALER.

MR. JACK HODGSON AND MR. MICHAEL HARMEL ARE BOTH FORBIDDEN TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS - EVEN TO GO TO WORK. NEITHER CAN THEY RECEIVE VISITORS, EXCEPT FOR A DOCTOR OR A MINISTER OF RELIGION. THREE OTHER PEOPLE WERE PLACED UNDER 12-HOUR HOUSE ARREST: THEY ARE MR. HODGSON'S WIFE, RICA, MR. I. A. BERNSTEIN AN ARCHITECT, A FORMER 'TREASON TRIALIST' AND MR. CECIL WILLIAMS, AN ACTOR. THEY MUST REMAIN INDOORS EACH NIGHT FROM 6.30 PM UNTIL 6 A.M., AND AT WEEKENDS: THEY HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO REPORT TO THE POLICE EACH LUNCH-HOUR.

MR. VORSTER, SOUTH AFRICA'S MINISTER OF JUSTICE, SAID THE HOUSE ARREST ORDERS WERE MADE TO PREVENT MR. HARMEL AND MR. HODGSON FROM MIXING WITH POLITICAL UNDESIRABLES. THE MINISTER TOLD REPORTERS THAT HE WOULD CONSIDER GRANTING EXIT PERMITS SHOULD ANY OF THE PEOPLE UNDER HOUSE ARREST WISH TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY PERMANENTLY.
