  • Description

WHEN NORTH VIETNAM ORIGINALLY ANNOUNCED THE RELEASE OF THE THREE PRISONERS, THEY SAID THEY WOULD BE FREED ON JULY 4 (AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY). THEY WERE ACTUALLY HANDED OVER TO AN AMERICAN DELEGATION ON MONDAY 4TH, AUGUST.

THE LEADER OF THE AMERICAN PEACE DELEGATION WHO ACCOMPANIED THE PRISONERS, RENARD DAVIS, SAID THAT HE HAD MET PRESIDENT PHAM VAN DONG OF NORTH VIETNAM ON MONDAY. HE QUOTED THE PREMIER AS SAYING THE NORTH VIETNAMESE WERE VERY CONFIDENT OF VICTORY, AND 1970 WOULD BE A YEAR OF FIERCE FIGHTING.

THE THREE RELEASED PRISONERS, WHO WERE FLOWN ON FROM VIETNAMESE TO BANGKOK, ARE: CAPTAIN WESLEY RUMBLE OF THE U.S. AIRFORCE, AGED 26. HE WAS SHOT DOWN OVER QUANG BINH ON APRIL 28, 1966. SEAMAN DOUGLAS HECDAHL, U.S. NAVY, AGED 23. HE WAS PICKED UP BY VIETNAMESE FISHERMEN AT NGHE AN ON APRIL 5, 1967 AFTER BEING WASHED OVERBOARD FROM HIS SHIP, THE USS CANBERRA. THIRD MAN, LIEUTENANT ROBERT FRISHMAN, U.S. NAVY, AGED 29, THE ONLY MARRIED MAN IN THE GROUP. HE WAS SHOT DOWN OVER HANOI, OCTOBER 24, 1967. ALL WERE PROMOTED WHILE IN PRISON.

THE THREE LOOKED PALE AND DRAWN. THE DIET OF RICE, SOUP AND PORK FAT, THEY SAID, HAD BEEN NUTRITIOUS BUT UNAPPETISING.

THEY SAID THEY HAD RECEIVED GOOD TREATMENT. LT. FRISHMAN SAID HE HAD BEEN INJURED WHEN HIS AIRCRAFT WAS SHOT DOWN BY A SURFACE-TO-AIR MISSILE. WHEN HE WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL, ALTHOUGH THE DOCTORS WERE ALREADY BUSY TREATING THEIR OWN PEOPLE, THEY OPERATED AND REMOVED HIS ELBOW. "IT WOULD HAVE BEN EASIER FOR THEM TO AMPUTATE THE ARMS" HE SAID.

THEY SPENT AN AVERAGE DAY EATING TWO MEALS, SMOKING CIGARETTES AND LISTENING TO THE VOICE OF VIETNAM RADIO. SEAMAN HEGDAHL SPENT MUCH OF HIS TIME READING.

ACCORDING TO THE U.S. REGULATIONS THEY HAD THE CHOICE OF RETURNING TO THE STATES EITHER BY MILITARY OR COMMERCIAL AIRLINES. THEY CHOSE THE COMMERCIAL ROUTE.
