Background: Horse racing......and the five-year-old Hoyobohi produced an upset in Sunday's (21 December) 25th running of the Arima memorial cup at the Nakayama race course near Tokyo. Starting at odds of 15-2, Hoyobohi held off the late challenge of the favourite Katsura Haiseiko by a fast-diminishing nose.

SYNOPSIS: Horse racing fans in the apartments overlooking the course had the best view of the start as the twelve runners set off from the far side of the track for Japan's final big race of the 1980 season.

Attendances at Japanese race courses are slightly down this year, but they still top the 10 million mark.

The 2500 metre (8200 ft) Arima memorial honours Arima Kinen, one of the legendary figures in Japanese racing. In contrast to attendances, gambling turnover is up 7.6 percent at nearly 140 billion yen (6.7 million dollars) this year. The punters' favourite was Katsura Haiseiko who was well-placed approaching the turn.

As the runners entered the straight, Katsura Haiseiko went to the front, but was soon challenged by Kaneminobu on the stands side and Hoyobohi on the far rails. With jockey Kazuhiko Kata working furiously to drive his mount up to the favourite, Hoyobohi finally took the lead a furlong (200 metres) out. And he held off the favourites renewed challenge to take the first prize of over 60 million yen (290,000 US dollars).
