Background: AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS WHO TRAVELLED TO PARIS FOR ARMISTICE DAY CEREMONIES LAST WEEK, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) VISITED VILLERS BRETONNEUX FOR A CEREMONY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR AUSTRALIAN WAR DEAD IN THE SOMME CAMPAIGN OF WORLD WAR 1. THE AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS VISITED THE GRAVES OF THE WAR DEAD AND DEDICATED A PLAQUE TO THE MEMORY OF THE FALLEN.

THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME HAD LITTLE MILITARY VALUE FOR THE BRITISH, FRENCH AND AUSTRALIAN ARMIES TAKING PART, AND THE LOSSES THERE WERE APPALLINGLY HIGH.

IN YESTERDAY'S CEREMONY THE AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS WALKED PAST THE LINES OF GRAVESTONES - MANY OF THEM ANONYMOUSLY DEDICATED. A MILITARY BAND PLAYED DURING THE LOWERING OF THE FLAG CEREMONIES.
