Background: SYNOPSIS: The main entrance to the research centre of CERN lies a mere 100 metres beyond this customs post on the French-Swiss border near Geneva
Visitors to CERN'S technology meeting will find that behind this barrier there are no barrier, whether of language or nationality; no bars to the free exchange of scientific and technological information
Inside the site, the street names give the first clue to the real nature of CERN - a place where young scientists from all over Europe come to carry out their experiments, following in he footsteps of their famous predecessors
Funded by 12 European nations, CERN house Europe's most powerful Atom smashers
....the most recent being a unique machine, 300 metres in diameter - the ISR - completed 4 months ahead of schedule and 5% under budget
Making 300,000 circuits a second, two beams of elementary particles cross and re-cross, meeting in practically head-on collision at 8 intersecting points like this
This machine is one of the technological marvels of our age. The vacuum system alone is the biggest and most intricate in the world, producing pressured equal to those found on the moon...and CERN is now building the biggest accelerator in the world - a ring 7 kilometres in circumference. It will straddle the French-Swiss border 40 metres underground
The tunnel for the machine is being constructed by an international consortium, using the latest boring techniques and automated vault construction
Particles in the new accelerator will be guided by high precision magnets, each 6 metres long, which are assembled at CERN from components made to CERN'S design by European industry.

Nearly 800 of these magnets will be required, a mass production operation with laboratory standards of precision
Associated with the enormous particle accelerators are big particle detectors like this, where lightning flashes display the interactions taking place at subatomic levels. Detectors like this could also be used for diagnostic work with X rays
These complex research operations need complex control systems, using the latest techniques in electronics and computers
The central computer service at CERN is probably the largest in Europe, with a huge memory of tapes and discs
...and able to handle large quantities of data at high speed
From high speeds to low temperatures - CERN has wide experience in the handling of liquid hydrogen and liquid helium
Research at the frontiers of knowledge demands technical perfection and a wide variety of skills, such as the ability to mould and form high precision plastic components
But CERN itself is one great experiment in human relations, where international collaboration has been manifestly successful; a source of inspiration to Europe in science and technology; a centre without barriers where new-found knowledge is made freely available for the benefit of society.
