  • Description

THE SPECIAL COMMISSION SET UP IN ACCRA BY THE GHANAIAN GOVERNMENT TO PROBE THE ASSETS OF CERTAIN CITIZENS HAS SO FAR HEARD EVIDENCE FROM ABOUT 130 WITNESSES SINCE IT STARTED SITTING IN NOVEMBER LAST YEAR. THE COMMISSION, HEADED BY MRS JUSTICE ANNIE JIAGGE, A HIGH COURT JUDGE, HEARD EVIDENCE ON THURSDAY BY MR W.Y. EDUFUL, THE DIRECTOR OF THE PUBLICITY SECRETARIAT THAT EXISTED UNDER THE DEPOSED NKRUMAH REGIME.

MR EDUFUL TOLD THE COMMISSION HOW PRESIDENT NKURMAH INSTRUCTED HIM IN 1964 TO ORDER THE PRINTING OF 25,000 COPIES OF A PAMPHLET ON MR K.A. GBEDEMAH, A FORMER MINISTER OF FINANCE IN THE NKRUMAH CABINET. THE 28-PAGE CARTOON-ILLUSTRATED PAMPHLET, ENTITLED "THE TRUTH ABOUT GBEDEMAH", OVER 20,000,000 NEW CEDIS (GBP10,000,000 STERLING) OF THE TAXPAYERS' MONEY.

MR EDUFUL SAID HE DID NOT KNOW THE AUTHOR OF THE PAMPHLET, NOR SHOULD HE TELL WHETHER ITS CONTENTS WERE TRUE OR FALSE. HE SAID EVEN IF HE'D KNOWN THE PAMPHLET WAS NOT TRUE, HE COULD NOT HAVE CRITICISED THE PRESIDENT FOR FEAR OF DETENTION OR LOSING HIS JOB.

ANOTHER WITNESS, THE FORMER GOVERNMENT PRINTER, MR R.A.H. AFFUL, WAS ASKED THE REASON WHY THE IMPRINT OF THE GOVERNMENT PRINTER DID NOT APPEAR ON THE PAMPHLETS.
