  • Description

Turkey's opposition leader Bulent Ecevit told a mass rally of his supporters in Ankara on Sunday (18 April) that his party was prepared to co-operate with the government to put an end to political unrest.

Thousands of supporters of Turkey's main opposition group, the People's Republican Party (RPP) attended the peaceful rally which was carefully watched by troops and riot police.

The security forces surrounded the entire City centre Square but stayed at least 50 yards (metres) away from the crowd in an apparent attempt to avoid clashes.

Mr. Ecevit told the rally that Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel's government was trying to divide the country, but added that the RPP was prepared to co-operate to avoid further political violence.

An estimated 30 people have been killed in acts of violence tied to politics since the start of the year, and police fear that extremist group -- smashed in the 1971 army coup in Turkey -- are re-forming.
