  • Description

Commune members in provinces in south and southwest China where two crops of rice are reaped a year, are bringing in a good crop of early rice at the end of severe dry spells, excessive rainfall and low temperature. In Szechuan the average yield of the 350,000 hectares of early rice has increased by over 10 per cent as compared with last year. For Hunan and the Kwangsi Chuang Autonomous Region, record figures were achieved both in terms of total and per yield, not only for rice, but for maize and other summer cereal cops as well.

The harvest has taken about a month to complete. The busy season also saw the planting of the late rice.

For 1977, an additional 66,000 hectares of early rice were planted as compared with last year. The good harvest was the result of all-out to bring the unfavourable weather conditions under control on the part of the affected communes, such as in protecting the young shoots from cold in the early stage of growth and fighting insect pests. It was also a tribute to the over-all good field management.

For The commune members are actively paying their agricultural tax in kind and selling their surplus grain to the state in support of the country's socialist construction.
