  • Description

A ROCKET MADE OF NEWSPAPER IS THE REMARKABLE INVENTION OF TWO WEST GERMAN STUDENTS. NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD VICTOR BRANTL AND HIS COUSIN KLAUS BRANTL, WHO IS 22, HAVE DEVELOPED PAPER-MADE ROCKETS WHICH ARE CAPABLE OF REACHING A HEIGHT OF 20 MILES.

THE COUSINS HAVE BEEN MAKING ROCKETS FOR FIVE YEARS. BUT THEY ASTONISHED EXPERTS WHEN, AS AN ECONOMY MEASURE, THEY SUCCESSFULLY USED OLD NEWSPAPERS BOTH AS CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL AND FOR ROCKET FUEL.

THE ROCKETS ARE MADE BY BONDING TOGETHER LAYERS OF NEWSPAPERS SOAKED AND HARDENED IN WATERGLASS -- THE SUBSTANCE USED FOR PRESERVING EGGS. FUEL IS PROVIDED BY NEWSPAPER SOAKED IN SODIUM NITRATE OXIDISER.

USING THESE METHODS. THE COUSINS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CUT THE COST OF A ROCKET TO ABOUT 30 SHILLINGS (ABOUT 3.6 DOLLARS). THEY CLAIM THAT THE EQUIVALENT SCIENTIFIC ROCKETS CURRENTLY IN USE COST THOUSANDS OF POUNDS.

SUCH ECONOMICAL CONSTRUCTION METHODS HAVE NATURALLY INTRIGUED THE EUROPEAN SPACE RESEARCH ORGANISATION, WHICH IS CURRENTLY DISCUSSING THE POSSIBILITIES OF PAPER ROCKETS. IT IS ALSO HOPED TO TEST THE ROCKET FROM ONE OF THE ORGANISATION'S LAUNCHING SITES IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

AND SINCE THE ROCKETS ARE MADE OF PAPER, THE COUSINS HAVE EVEN BEEN ABLE TO WORK OUT A SYSTEM FOR BURNING THEM ONCE THE PAYLOAD HAS BEEN DELIVERED SO THAT THERE IS NO DEBRIS TO HURTLE BACK TO EARTH.
