  • Description

A DELEGATION OF FIVE GHANAIANS IS IN THE KENYA CAPITAL, NAIROBI, TO EXPLAIN TO PRESIDENT KENYATTA AND HIS GOVERNMENT THE REASONS FOR THE RECENT MILITARY COUP IN GHANA.

THE DELEGATION IS BEING LED BY SIR ARKU KORSAH, THE FORMER CHIEF JUSTICE OF GHANA WHO WAS DISMISSED FROM HIS POST TWO YEARS AGO BY DR. NKRUMAH. WITH HIM ARE MAJOR-GENERAL S. OTU, A FORMER CHIEF OF STATE, MR. JOE APPIAH, A LAWYER WHO SPENT SOME TIME IN DETENTION UNDER DR. NKRUMAH'S GOVERNMENT, AND MR. E. ARDAY AND MR. OSEI TUTU. BOTH OFFICIALS OF THE NEW GOVERNMENT. YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) THEY HAD LUNCH WITH PRESIDENT KENYATTA AT STATE HOUSE.

SIR ARKU SAID THAT HIS PARTY WOULD EXPLAIN TO PRESIDENT KENYATTA THE REASONS FOR THE COUP, AND WANTED TO DISCOUNT RUMOURS THAT FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS HAD BEEN BEHIND IT. HE ADDED THAT HIS MISSION WOULD NOT SPECIFICALLY SEEK KENYA'S RECOGNITION OF THE NEW GOVERNMENT.

THE FIVE GHANAIANS CAME TO NAIROBI AFTER A VISIT TO ADDIS ABABA, WHERE THEY WERE "VERY WELL RECEIVED" BY EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE, SAID SIR ARKU. A SIMILAR GOODWILL MISSION IS IN THE IVORY COAST CAPITAL, ABIDJAN.
