Background: Australia finished the fourth day of the final cricket test against England in Melbourne on Wednesday (12 February) at three-for-274.
The home team still needs 103 runs to make England bat again. Ian Redpath and Rick McCosker put on 111 for the first wicket before McCosker was out of the bowling of Arnold for 76. The Ian Chappell and Redpath added 104 before Chappell was out off Greig for 50. Redpath was the next to go again off Greig. He made 83 in a long stubborn innings.
Greg Chappell (39 not out) and Ross Edwards (9 not out) will continue on the fifth and final day needing to make a long stand to save the match for Australia.
The pitch was still playing well, but there was a tendency for the ball to keep low at times.
The England bowlers strived throughout the fourth day to make the break through and give England their only win of the series. Australia have regained the Ashes and lead four nil in the series.
The scores at the end of the fourth day ... Australia 152 and three-for-274. England 529.
