    THE SWEDISH AMBASSADOR TO JAPAN, MR. K.F. ALMKUBIST, CALLED ON THE 69-YEAR-OLD JAPANESE WRITER YASUNARI KAWABATA AT HIS HOME AT KAMAKURA, ABOUT 30 MILES (50 KMS) SOUTH WEST OF TOKYO, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) TO INFORM HIM OFFICIALLY THAT HE HAD WON THE 1968 NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE. THE AWARD WILL BE PRESENTED TO MR. KAWABATA BY KING GUSTAV OF SWEDEN AT A CEREMONY IN STOCKHOLM ON THE 10TH OF DECEMBER.

    THE NOBEL PRIZE, FOUNDED BY THE SWEDISH PHILANTROPIST ALFRED NOBEL, CARRIES WITH IT A CASH AWARD OF 350,000 SWEDISH CROWNS -- ABOUT 67,000 U.S. DOLLARS. THIS YEAR'S PRIZE WAS AWARDED TO THE JAPANESE WRITER "FOR HIS NARRATIVE MASTERSHIP, WHICH, WITH GREAT SENSIBILITY, EXPRESSES THE ESSENCE OF THE JAPANESE MIND." MR. KAWABATA, A FAMOUS AND HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL NOVELIST IN HIS COUNTRY, IS DESCRIBED BY SOME JAPANESE AS A "HUMAN TREASURE."
