  • Description

Chances for peace in the middle east leapt forward tonight as the syrians and the Israelis appeared near to early agreement on separating their forces along the battle-torn golan heights. US secretary of state henry kissinger told reporters before boarding his plane to Israel that he would return here tomorrow to discuss further details of an agreement with syrian president hafez al assad. Senior us officials travelling with Dr. Kissinger on his shuttle from Jerusalem to Damascus earlier today said that if he saw Israeli and Syrian positions were sufficiently close on key outstanding issues, such as thinking out their forces, he would submit new American proposals in an attempt to tie up an agreement before his return to washington on monday. The officials have said that Dr. Kissinger would recess his four-weed old peace mission tomorrow and if he could not close the gaps between the two belligerants' positions. Dr. Kissinger said he had left two of his assistants here tonight to work on preparing some basic documents for a disengagement agreement.
