  • Description

INTRODUCTION Thailand and Malaysia have signed a new border agreement under which troops will be allowed to cross into each other's territory for anti-Communist operations. The agreement was announced on Friday (4 February) during a visit by Thai Foreign Minister, Dr. Upadit Panchariyangkun to Malaysia.

SYNOPSIS: At the Foreign Ministry in Kuala Lumpur, Dr. Upadit was welcomed by his Malaysian counterpart, Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen. There had been a border agreement between the two countries but this was revoked by the previous civilian government in Thailand after anti-Malaysian demonstrations in the southern Thai border town of Betong.

The two Ministers and their delegations held talks about the new border pact and Dr. Upadit later told reporters that details of the new agreement would be worked out by the military authorities, but said it would cover the principle of troops crossing the border in "hot pursuit". Troops from Malaysia and Thailand have been working in combined operations in the border area in anti-Communist operations.

A combined force of 3,500 soldiers was engaged in the operation in the Sadao district of southern Thailand. In one engagement 25 Communist guerrillas were reported killed during the shelling of a guerrilla command base.
