President de Gaulle today (Tuesday) received the Rumanian Prime Minister, Mr. Ion Gheorgho Maurer for talks at the Elysee Palace. Mr. Maurer arrived in Paris yesterday, at the head of a delegation that will have talks with French ministers on strengthening political, trade and cultural contacts between the two countries.
On arrival at the Elysee, Mr. Maurer was received by the Head of Protocol.
The visit has aroused considerable interest as the first by such a high powered ministerial delegation from an East European state within the Soviet sphere of influence to a major West European power. It was arranged on the initiative of the Rumanians and without prior consultation with Moscow.
Apart from ministerial discussions, the Rumanian delegation will be visiting French atomic centres at Chinon and Saclay. (The Rumanians, who are embarking on an ambitious programmed of industrialisation, are thought to have an atomic reactor high on their "shopping list". They have recently made enquiries in Washington and London.) They also thought to be interested in buying complete petro-chemical, textile and metallurgical factories, providing the French offer advantageous credit terms.
