  • Description

POLICE CLASHED WITH MORE THAN ONE-THOUSAND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN SEOUL ON TUESDAY. THE STUDENTS HAD STAGED A FIVE-HOUR SIT-DOWN DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE EDUCATION MINISTRY IN PROTEST AGAINST THE DISMISSAL OF THE UNIVERSITY'S PRESIDENT.

FLAG-WAVING STUDENT LEADERS WHIPPED UP FERVOUR AMONG THE CHANTING STUDENTS AS THE POLICE APPROACHED. THEY REFUSED TO LISTEN TO REQUESTS THAT THE DISMISSAL BE DISCUSSED. THE STUDENTS, WHO WERE BLOCKING TRAFFIC, ALSO IGNORED POLICE WARNINGS TO HALT THE PROTEST.

FINALLY, THE POLICE CHARGED AT THE DEMONSTRATORS, AND CLASHES BROKE OUT. POLICE RETALIATED WITH TEAR-GAS AND CLUBS. SOME 80 STUDENTS AND 20 POLICEMEN WERE INJURED. MORE THAN 200 STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED. LATER, MOST OF THEM WERE RELEASED, BUT THEIR LEADERS WERE HELD.

HOWEVER, THE STUDENTS ACCOMPLISHED ONE OF THEIR PURPOSES: THE NEW UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT RESIGNED. BUT THEY DO NOT APPROVE HIS SUCCESSOR, AND MAY DEMONSTRATE AGAINST HIM, TOO.
