THE IRISH REPUBLIC'S AGRICULTURE MINISTER, MR. CHARLES HOUGHEY, REFUSED TO MEET A DEPUTATION FROM 10,000?

  • Description

THE IRISH REPUBLIC'S AGRICULTURE MINISTER, MR. CHARLES HOUGHEY, REFUSED TO MEET A DEPUTATION FROM 10,000 FARMERS WHO BLOCKED THE STREETS OF DUBLIN TODAY (WEDNESDAY) WITH A PARADE OF PROTEST AGAINST LOW CATTLE PRICES. THE FARMERS HAVE BEEN CAMPING ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF DUBLIN FOLLOWING A "FARMERS' RIGHTS" MARCH FROM COUNTRY AREAS.

ONE CONTINGENT OF THE MARCH SPENT 12 DAYS WALKING FROM BANTRY, IN THE SOUTH WEST. THE FARMERS' ASSOCIATION, LED BY ITS PRESIDENT, MR. RICKARD DEASEY, IS SEEKING A "NEW DEAL" FROM THE GOVERNMENT FOR THE IRISH REPUBLIC'S FARMING COMMUNITY. AFTER TODAY'S MASS PARADE IN DUBLIN, A DEPUTATION OF NINE OF THE FARMERS TRIED UNSUCCESSFULLY TO SEE MR. HOUGHEY.

THE DEPUTATION, INCLUDING MR. DEASEY, IMMEDIATELY BEGAN A SIT-DOWN STRIKE ON THE STEPS OF THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE. THE MEN DECLARED THEY'D STAY THERE UNTIL MR. HOUGHEY AGREED TO SEE THEM -- A MONTH IF NECESSARY.
