    ATHENS APPEARED QUIET TODAY (THURSDAY) AFTER THE FAILURE OF KING CONSTANTINE'S ATTEMPT TO OVERTHROW GREECE'S RULING MILIARY JUNTA. COLONEL GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS, THE 47-YEAR-OLD MILITARY LEADER WHO HAS TAKEN OVER THE PRIME MINISTER'S JOB, LAUGHED AND JOKED AT A PRESS CONFERENCE IN ATHENS AS HE DENOUNCED THE KING'S ACTION.

    THE COLONELS WHO DEFEATED THE KING TODAY TIGHTENED THEIR CONTROL OF THE COUNTRY AND ROUNDED UP SENIOR OFFICERS WHO HAD BACKED THE YOUNG KING'S SHORT-LIVED CHALLENGE. COLONEL PAPADOPOULOS SAID AN AMNESTY HAD BEEN GRANTED TO A FEW OFFICERS WHO SIDED WITH THE KING, BUT SOME MIGHT FACE DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

    KING CONSTANTINE'S REVOLT HAD COLLAPSED A FEW HOURS EARLIER WITH THE ARREST OF HIS THREE PRINCIPAL BACKERS. LIEUTENANT-GENERAL GEORGE PERIDES, COMMANDER OF THE THIRD ARMY CORPS IN SALONIKA, BRIGADIER VIDALIS AND BRIGADIER ESSERMAN, COMMANDER OF THE 20TH ARMOURED DIVISION.

    LIEUTENANT-GENERAL YEORUIOS ZOITAKIS WAS APPOINTED RECENT IN THE KING'S PLACE, AND FOR KING CONSTANTINE HIMSELF THE FUTURE SEEMED UNCERTAIN. HE ARRIVED AT ROME'S CLAMPING AIRPORT EARLY TODAY WITH HIS DANISH-BORN WIFE QUEEN ANNE-MARIE AND HIS TWO CHILDREN.
