  • Description

The Israeli Army has introduced a scheme under whichex-criminals are invited to volunteer for military service. Those who enter they Army receive an education, and may be taught a trade.

The scheme is a development of an earlier plan under which young unemployed boys were taken into the army and educated in military camps.

The formal criminals, like the boys, also receive full military training, including the handling of weapons. Like other Israeli menthey are finally allowed to take their weapons home with them.

The Israeli Army is already claiming that its rehabilitation programme has been a completes success in 40 per cent of the men. This, the Army says, compares well with the international scene, in which a rehabilitation of 15 per cent is considered good.

The commanding officer in the camp where this film was shot admits that some of the former criminals do end up back in jail. But, he says, not one has committed a crime while wearing an army uniform??? by using an army weapon.

SYNOPSIS: It looks like a conventional classroom. But this one is inside an Israeli military camp, and all the students are former convicts and delinquents. It's part of a scheme recently introduced in Israel in which former prisoners are invited to receive an education and learn a trade by volunteering for the Army.

Like more conventional students, those attending military school rooms receive regular report cards....initialled by their commanding officer.

Once the students achieve a satisfactory standard of education in the classroom they move on to learning a trade.

Military vehicles provide ample opportunity for the students to learn engineering and mechanics. Others may be taught carpentry or sheet metalwork. The Israeli Army says the rehabilitation scheme has been a great success. It admits some of the men do not adjust, and return to a life of crime. But it says in forty per cent of the men, the programme is a completes success.

The men don't spend all their time learning their trade. They are also expected to learn normal Army discipline - and take a full course in military training. At the end of the course they are issued with a weapon...and like most other Israelis, they are allowed to take ti home with them. It's part of Israel's effort to ensure that most people are skilled in military techniques.
