    ON THE FIFTH DAY OF THE FRENCH COAL MINER'S STRIKE (TUESDAY), THE NATION'S 240,000 MINERS FACED THE GOVERNMENT WITH A TOTAL REFUSAL TO OBEY "BACK TO WORK" ORDERS.

    IN PARIS AND OTHER CITIES, WORKERS STAGED 15-MINUTE TOKEN STRIKES IN SOLIDARITY, AND IN PROTEST THE REQUISITIONING OF MINERS, WHICH THEY CLAIMED INFRINGED THE RIGHT OT STRIKE.

    THE MOST WIDESPREAD STOPPAGE IN THE CAPITAL OCCURRED AT FIVE P.M.WHEN STAFF AT LE BOURGET AIRPORT STOPPED WORK.AT THE SAME TIME BUS WORKERS OBSERVED THE STOPPAGE.ELECTRICITY WAS CUT OFF AND THE METRO UNDERGROUND SYSTEM AND SUBURBAN TRAINS STOPPED.TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND PEDESTRIAN CONTROLS BLACKED OUT, AND LONG QUEUES OF CARS AND HEAVY TRANSPORT BLOCKED MANY MAIN ROADS.

    THE MINERS' LEADERS HAVE SAID THEY ARE DETERMINED TO STOP WORK UNTIL THEIR WAGE CLAIM - AN ELEVEN PER CENT INCREASE - WAS SATISFIED.
