  • Description

Returning to Niamey after his visit to neighbouring Mali and Upper Volta, President Seyni Kountche of Niger said on Wednesday (February 19) that chances of agreement between Mali and Upper Volta in their present border dispute appear to have improved.

President Kountche had paid visits to both Ouagadougou and Bamako, capitals of Upper Volta and Mali, to see Presidents Sangoore Lamizana and Moussa Traore.

Mali and Upper Volta are in dispute about ownership of lands in the Agacher region. Recently, there have been armed clashes in the area and casualties have been reported. The significance of the region lies in the rich mineral deposits recently reported to have been found.

Now, the dispute is to be discussed at a summit meeting of the Economic Community of West Africa, due to take place in the first two weeks of April.
