  • Description

President Albert Bongo of Gabon paid a quick visit to N'Djamena, the capital of Chad, on Thursday (11 September) as he returned from a private visit to France. He was met at the airport by Chad's President Felix Malloum and a handful of government officials and diplomats.

The two Presidents talked for two hours before President Bongo continued on his way home. He was mildly critical of central African nations for what he called their failure to harmonise their regional activities. He suggested the individual African states were too "egoistic".

He also had a mild jibe for Chad's withdrawing from the Central African Customs and Economic Union. He said, "Unfortunate is the man who walks alone".

Chad is also considering the possibility of shipping cattle and fresh meat to Nigeria. On Monday and Tuesday (8-9 September) a delegation from Nigeria headed by Foreign Trade Secretary V. Bello met with Chad's Director of Commerce, Captain dering, and a delegation from Chad.

No decision has been reached on whether Chad will provide meat and livestock to Nigeria. The two countries are considering setting up a quasi-national company which would handle the direct government-to-government transaction.

A Chad delegate said there has been illegal meat sales across the frontier and that for the reason Chad has temporarily suspended meat sales to Nigeria. But Chad has expressed an interest in setting up such a company.

Following the two days of talks, Mr. Bello said he was pleased with the discussions.
