  • Description

A 24 Hour general strike began in Argentina on Thursday (April 23) as factory workers walked off the job throughout the country, flights were cancelled or delayed and train service ground to a virtual halt.

Police kept a close watch on strike activities and army units were kept ready to quell violence threatened by some union leaders.

Supervisory personnel kept telephone and telegraph service going on an emergency basis. Subway service in Buenos Aires was nearly normal and most buses were operating.

Authorities kept a close watch on the industrial centre of Cordoba where 10,000 auto workers left their jobs to attend a public rally. Last year more than 20 people were killed there in a scuffle with police when auto workers struck.

The general strike was the first strike this year against the government of Juan Carlos Ongania. The walkout was prompted by demands for an end to the government's wage freeze.
