  • Description

The Roman Catholic Primate of Belgium, Cardinal Leo Jozef Suenensgn, on Friday (29 October) appealed to the World Synod of Bishops for individual Bishops' conferences to be allowed introduce a married priesthood.

The Cardinal was speaking on the connection of the Synod's to main themes - the priesthood and world justice. Replying to the critics of a married priesthood in any part of the world church, he said that it would be unjust to impose a uniform law on all regions for fear that a relaxation of the celibacy rule would spread from one to the other. He rejected the argument that the admission of married priests in one part of the church would lead to a widespread breakdown of the celibacy rule.

Visnews is syndicating this film as Vatican City officials have indicated that this might be the final occasion on which cameramen would be allowed entry to the Synod.
