  • Description

A kind of diplomacy -- that was how Sir Alec Douglas-Home, Britain's Foreign Secretary, described the outcome of Monday's (10 September) meeting of Foreign Ministers of the European Economic Community in Stockholm.

The meeting was called to discuss the Community's relationship with the United States, and marks the first time the Community, as a whole, has envisaged organising its joint relations with another country.

Ministers, from the nine constituent member-countries, prepared the bulk of the draft of a text to be submitted for approval by the United States government. Some hope the text will be drawn up before President Nixon's European visit in November.

High in the list of topics covered by the draft were economics, monetary affairs, and foreign policy issues. Defence is not covered, as Ministers feel security matters should be discussed within the NATO framework.

After the two-hour session, in Copenhagen's Christianborg Palace, the French Foreign Ministers, M. Michel Jobert told reporters, "we have every reason to be content with the result of today's discussions", adding "a document on European identity is something we have needed for a long time."
