East European entrants won the premiere sprint events -- the 100 metres finals -- at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, Italy, on Tuesday (3 September).

Valeri Borzov, of the Soviet Union, scored his third successive European 100 metres triumph with a championship record time of 10.27 seconds. The blond Russian, who almost failed to qualify wit ha bad start in the semi-finals -- came in strides ahead of Italian Poeietro Mennea and West German, Klaus-Dieter Bieler.

Polish housewife Irena Szewinska signalled the end of an era when she humbled world record-holder, Renate Stencher, of East Germany to take the women's 100 metres gold medal.

Szweinska's time of 11.13 seconds was a championship record. It was the second time in three months that the 28-year-old Warsaw star had beaten Stecher, who won the gold medal at the 1971 Helsinki European Championships and at the Munich Olympics.

In third place, close behind the leaders, was 21-year-old London bank clerk, Andrea Lynch.

In the semi-finals of the men's 400 metres sprint, K. Honz of West Germany, and David Jenkins, of Britain, both won their heats to qualify for the finals. Jenkins' time of 45.93 seconds was the faster of the two, and indicated that he should retain his European title for the event.
